What Is a French Drain?

A French drain is a gravel-filled trench containing a perforated pipe that collects groundwater and redirects it away from your foundation. The name has nothing to do with France — it comes from Henry French, the Massachusetts farmer who popularized the design in the 1800s. Today it remains one of the most effective solutions for managing groundwater and surface runoff around residential foundations.

French drains can be installed in two primary configurations:

  • Exterior French drains — installed around the outside perimeter of the foundation, intercepting water before it reaches the wall
  • Interior French drains (drain tile systems) — installed inside the basement along the perimeter, collecting water that has already entered or is seeping through the wall-floor joint

When Do You Need a French Drain?

French drains are one of the best solutions for several specific water management challenges:

  • Water consistently collecting along one side of the house after rain
  • Standing water in the yard that doesn't drain away within 24 hours
  • Basement seepage concentrated along one or two walls
  • A wet crawl space fed by exterior groundwater
  • Surface runoff from a neighboring property or hillside directed toward your home
  • Saturated soil putting constant hydrostatic pressure on foundation walls

Our French Drain Installation Process

  1. Site Evaluation: We assess where water is entering or collecting, identify the direction of flow, and determine the best drain route and discharge point.
  2. Trench Excavation: We dig to the appropriate depth — typically at or below footing level for perimeter drains — with a consistent slope toward the discharge point.
  3. Gravel Bed & Pipe Installation: A layer of clean gravel is placed in the trench, the perforated pipe is installed and wrapped in filter fabric to prevent soil intrusion, then backfilled with additional gravel.
  4. Discharge Routing: Water is directed to a safe exit point — a municipal storm connection, dry well, daylight outlet, or sump pit depending on your property.
  5. Restoration: We restore surface areas disturbed during installation and confirm the system is draining correctly.

How Long Does a French Drain Last?

A well-installed French drain with properly filtered pipe can last 30 to 40 years or longer. The main maintenance concern is keeping the outlet clear and monitoring the system after heavy storm events. We'll show you what to watch for and how to keep your system performing well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exterior drains intercept water before it reaches the wall, which is ideal for new construction or when the exterior is accessible. Interior systems are often more practical for existing homes where excavation around the foundation isn't feasible.
For basements where moisture is driven by hydrostatic pressure or surface water near the foundation, a French drain is often a highly effective solution. We assess your specific situation to confirm it's the right fit.
Depth depends on the application. Surface drains to manage yard water may be 12–18 inches deep. Foundation-level drains typically match the depth of your footing.
The concept is straightforward, but proper slope, depth, pipe sizing, and outlet location are critical to performance. Errors in any of these areas can result in a system that fails to drain or backs up over time.
